Warnings and Lessons Absorbedfrom the Years of War and Restoration of Peacein Bosnia and Herzeg

Saman Noah

The above-entitled book introduces the experiences gained by journalists during the war of societal components that had hardly hit the State of Herzeg-Bosnia (1992-1995).  It actually presents an insightful journalistic vision of the role played by the press in that war (pushing into war and then moving towards peace).

The book points out how such bloody war was covered by the various components of journalists. It describes the part they had been playing in the course of their independent or biased coverage of the reconciliation process and the restoration of peace, tolerance and co-existence among the various societal components.

In a nutshell,  this  book transfers their various viewpoints during situations of the failure and disappointments encountered in the course of the efforts exerted to rebuild the state and in the meantime, it illustrates how the stage of transitional justice was viably achieved on the ground and how war criminals were eventually brought to justice for the war crimes they had brutally committed  25 years before.

Saman’s  book includes a briefing on the visions adopted by  15 Bosnian writers and journalists from amongst the Bosnian three main communities (Orthodox Serbs, Catholic Croats and Bosnian Muslims), It investigates many issues such as the roots of their conflict; the breakout of a long devastating war that had lasted for several years  and its repercussions on the social fabric of the society and on effectuating a remarkable demographic change in the society; the experience of the transitional justice and last but not least the trial of war criminals. Meanwhile, the book presents their observations on Dayton Constitution which had eventually imposed the end of war and the distribution of authority among the three main components of the country.

Among the items presented in the book are; the various views of Bosnian writers, journalists and activists; the social, economic and political backgrounds of the Bosnia-Herzeg War which extended from March 1992 to November 1995 cropping the lives of roughly 100,000 from amongst a countrys total population of 4,300,000 and left as high as around 30,000 victims of brutal sexual abuse and over 30,000 others buried in 700 mass graves

The book is the product of two training workshops organized by the International Media Support ‘IMS’, a remarkable press organization which is known for its support for free media, in coordination with the Bosnia-Herzeg Journalists’ Syndicate. The workshops were both held in the Bosnian capital Sarajevo with the participation of  many Iraqi and Syrian activists and media personnel including journalists from the’ Network of Iraqi Reporters of Investigative Journalism’ ‘NIRIJ’. These two workshops focused mainly on the lessons learnt from the Bosnian civil war, from the transitional period, and the role played by all media channels during the two periods of war and restoration of peace.

After the first edition got out of print, NIRIJ Network hopes to get the book printed in a more extensive edition including new experiences gained from the Bosnia-Herzeg War which had not been included in the first edition, particularly after the book had drawn the attention of many activists, authors, legalists, and journalists in Ninwa Governorate. Not to mention that the book introduced very significant experiences as regards the rebuilding of peace and fraternity among the various sects of the society, and is regarded as a rich reference that had been introduced in several training and cultural workshops.

It is worth mentioning that the book had been translated into Kurdish language by the journalist ‘Awatt Ahmad’, who had published most of its parts in the official Kurdish newspaper ‘Sabah Kurdistan’.
